New details have been released about the three-alarm fire that spread through three multi-family, wood-framed buildings at 128 Park Ave., in Hoboken at around 4:45 p.m. Sunday night. Public Safety Public Director Angel Alicea said three members of the Hoboken Fire Department – two captains and a firefighter – sustained minor injuries and a total of eight families had to be displaced.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and is the part of a fluid, ongoing police investigation, he said.
Alicea said the buildings are in very bad shape and the families will not be able to return to their homes. Two families from two adjacent buildings at 122 and 130 Park Ave., were allowed to return that night.
None of the eight families accepted an offer for temporary housing and instead found alternative lodging on their own, Alicea said. A 74-year-old woman had shortness of breath and was sent to Hoboken University Medical Center and released soon after, he said.
When asked about a potential donation fund for the families who were displaced, Alicea said he and Mayor Dawn Zimmer are waiting for more information and then will work toward setting it up.
“We need to secure help to get the message across,” Alicea said. “We have to find some way to help out in that respect.”
